Why this briefing matters: South Africa has high crime rates, but with situational awareness, route planning, and simple protocols, the risk drops dramatically. This document gives everyone the facts — town by town, day by day — so we all know what to expect and how to handle it.
⚠️ Land Cruiser Target Warning: Two pristine Toyota Land Cruisers are apex targets for cross-border syndicates, particularly in Mpumalanga and KZN. Precinct-level stats reflect average-vehicle risk — our convoy's risk profile is elevated. Factor this into all transit decisions.

Safety Rating System

RED — Avoid entirely
AMBER — Reroute if practical
YELLOW — Transit only, daylight
GREEN — Safe for fuel & dining
Full rating criteria

RED: High carjacking/robbery, documented tourist attacks, no safe transit window. Action: reroute to avoid entirely.

AMBER: Carjacking >20/100k OR robbery >200/100k OR documented violent transit-corridor incidents (CIT heists, protest blockades, fake police) OR town-centre exposure with high robbery. Action: reroute if practical; if unavoidable, maximum caution.

YELLOW: Highway pass-through only (no town-centre entry) with grade-separated or partial bypass. OR low carjacking (<20/100k) with brief transit (≤10 min, no planned stops). No violent transit-corridor incidents in past 24 months. Action: stay on highway, don't stop unless needed. Daylight transit only.

GREEN: Carjacking <10/100k, robbery low (<200/100k), no transit-corridor incidents. Action: normal caution, safe for fuel/dining stops.

What does "bypassed" mean?
Many towns rated AMBER or RED are on our route's highway but our road bypasses the town centre on a grade-separated freeway (no traffic lights, no intersections, no stopping). We drive past, not through. A 5-minute highway pass-through ≠ entering a danger zone. AMBER towns where the route stays on a national highway without entering the town centre may qualify for lower operational risk — but only if the highway segment itself is not a documented crime corridor.

Bypass quality matters: (a) Grade-separated freeway bypass = strongest case. (b) Highway skirting town edge with at-grade intersections = borderline. (c) No bypass, route goes through town = must be justified by very low crime numbers alone.

Daylight mandate: All YELLOW and AMBER ratings assume daytime transit. Any transit after sunset defaults to RED-level caution regardless of the town's rating.

⚠️ NATIONAL DIESEL SHORTAGE (Active April 2026): Widespread diesel shortages due to US-Iran conflict disrupting global fuel supply chains. Multiple provinces affected (WC, GP, FS, NW, NC). Diesel price up R7.51/L on 1 Apr (temporary R3/L levy reduction until 5 May). Fill at every opportunity. Call ahead to remote stations. Carry 2×20L jerry cans per vehicle on all legs. Critical legs: D1 (limited N4 stops), D6 (single GREEN stop at Lydenburg), D13 (limited R56 corridor fuel), D22 (zero fuel for 102 km), D24 (Oudtshoorn shortage confirmed 31 Mar).

This was misleading — the N2→N3 connection passes through the Durban western corridor (Pinetown/Hillcrest) on the N3 freeway. There is no feasible route that avoids the Durban metro entirely. 🔴 INSURANCE GAP — Chubb/Amex Centurion: The Amex Centurion rental car benefit (Chubb) explicitly excludes off-road use. Sani Pass is off-road (8 km gravel/rock 4×4-only section). Chubb will NOT cover vehicle damage on the pass. Bushlore’s CDW covers standard overlanding — confirm specific Sani Pass liability with Clyde (clyde@bushlore.com) before departure.
